I am a French-American essayist. I write about what makes people free, nations sovereign and progress possible.
I read the United States and France side by side, because each explains the other. I defend liberty, property, work and merit, a state that stays out of what it cannot run and is strong where it must be, abundant energy, industry at home and the science that makes both possible.
I am an optimist about what people can build, and impatient with the rents, the cronyism and the bureaucracy that stand in the way. No party, leader or ally gets a pass.
Four essays to begin with
A first selection, provisional until each essay has passed its final review.
- Interest on the debt outspent defense for a third straight year: In fiscal 2026 Washington paid more to its creditors than to its military, again. This isn't news. It's what makes it worth worrying about.
- Dear French friends, the denial is about the bill, not the waiting room: OECD wages, IMF output, the tax wedge, ER stretchers and the carbon bill: a France to United States comparison the French debate keeps avoiding.
- A speed limit in orbit, and the question of who owns the switch: Kyiv blames SpaceX, Musk points to Washington, and Eutelsat jumped about 23% in Paris. The fight over one speed limit exposes who really controls the satellites.
- The fly is not dreaming. That is exactly why the question matters: For 30 seconds we built a fly's sky. The builder's chair shows why worlds are thrifty, why nobody can tell who flies, and what makers owe first.

The Sunday letter
One email on Sunday: the essay of the week and the question worth carrying into the next one, from both sides of the Atlantic. The letter is paused for now: no signups and no sends while the site is rebuilt.
