In France, the Interior Ministry's consolidated count for Saturday, October 17, 2026 is 2,397 arrests and 997 police officers and gendarmes hurt, seven of them seriously, according to RFI. The day was a national mobilisation against the cost of living that turned into widespread violence and looting.

How does that compare with the last time France saw urban unrest of this size?

The 2005 benchmark

A French Senate report on the state of emergency law gives two points for 2005. On the night of November 6 to 7, before the prime minister announced the state of emergency, 1,408 vehicles had been burned and 395 people arrested, with 36 police officers hurt. Over the twenty days that began on October 27, the report counts nearly 2,800 arrests and 93 officials hurt.

Face to face

Arrests: 2,397 on one day in 2026, against nearly 2,800 over twenty days in 2005. That is about 86% of the 2005 total, in one day. Injured officers: 997 against 93, a ratio of about 10.7.

The two counts may not measure the same thing. The 2026 figure covers police officers and gendarmes, and the sources read here give no breakdown of the severity beyond the seven serious cases. The 2005 figure counts officials and says about ten were hurt by gunfire. The Senate text does not say whether minor injuries were included.
