Nvidia's Week in Europe: A German AI Pact and $250M for UK
Topics: AI at Work & Governance, Today's News

Jeff's Daily Pick. In one week, Nvidia lined up a state backed AI pact in Berlin and $250 million of compute for AI safety in London. Europe is buying sovereignty with American chips.
In Germany and the United Kingdom, Nvidia stood at the center of two government AI plans in the same week of October 2026. In London, the company announced on October 13 and 14 a compute donation valued at $250 million over five years for agentic safety and security research. In Berlin, Handelsblatt reported on October 15 that the federal government plans a cooperation agreement with Nvidia to push AI into German industry, and Reuters confirmed it with government sources the next day.
Germany: physical AI and a state check
According to Handelsblatt, the initiative has two goals: a foundation for physical AI, used to train robots and autonomous vehicles, and internationally competitive AI models for industry. The government is reportedly ready to invest a three digit million euro sum, mostly to rent computing capacity on Deutsche Telekom's AI cloud and train new models. Nvidia would contribute engineers and chips, and about a dozen German companies plan to take part. Reuters reported that the deal would be built around SOOFI, the Sovereign Open Source Foundation Models project launched last year, and announced at the Invest in Germany conference in Berlin, where Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang is a guest. Telekom and Nvidia already opened an industrial AI cloud in Munich running on up to 10,000 Nvidia chips.
United Kingdom: $50 million a year of compute
Nvidia's UK commitment works out to $50 million in compute access a year. Most will go to the wider UK research community, with a share for the British Open Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD) led by Oxford, the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR) led by UCL, and Imperial College London. Research areas include secure agents, open model security and real world threat mitigation. Compute will be delivered through UK based Nvidia Cloud Partners on UK hosted infrastructure; provider selection, technical architecture and commercial terms are still to be agreed. Reuters noted that Britain hosts no major AI developer but wants a lead role in evaluation through its AI Security Institute.
What it shows / what it doesn't
- Shows: the UK pledge is in kind compute, valued by Nvidia, not cash.
- Shows: Germany's plan, as reported, puts public money into compute and models with Nvidia as technical partner.
- Doesn't show: final German figures or signed terms; the deal had not been announced officially at publication.
- Doesn't show: which cloud providers will host the UK compute.
- Status: Nvidia press release; German plan from Handelsblatt and Reuters government sources.
The common thread
Both governments use the word sovereign, and both run that sovereignty on hardware from a single American supplier. The German money buys capacity on a domestic cloud; the British gift arrives as hours on machines Nvidia selects partners to run. The German announcement is expected at the Berlin conference, and the UK terms are still open.
