In Texas, early voting for the November 3 general election opens on Monday, October 19, and runs through Friday, October 30. On October 16 the Texas Secretary of State announced a record: 19,041,684 registered voters.
The question is what that record does and does not tell you before the first ballot is cast.
The statewide number
The Secretary of State says the roll is 2.2% above the November 2024 general election and 2% above the March 2026 primary. The Texas Tribune adds a comparison with the last midterm: 7.7% higher than November 2022. Dividing the 2026 figure by 1.077 gives about 17.68 million for 2022, so the roll has grown by roughly 1.36 million names. That is a calculation from the published percentage, not a figure the state printed.
The county that went the other way
According to the Tribune, Tarrant County, which political watchers consider a swing county, was the biggest county where registrations fell. It has 32,503 fewer voters than four years ago, a drop of 2.6%. The same article notes that Tarrant's population grew by 4.1% between 2022 and 2025, based on Census Vintage estimates. A county can lose voters on the roll for several reasons, including record cleanup, moves and processing delays. The sources above do not say which of them explains Tarrant.
Registered is not voted
A registration is a name on a list. The Tribune reports that nearly a quarter of registered voters cast a ballot in the March 2026 primary. That is the best available hint of interest this year, and it is a primary, not the general election.
What the headlines leave out
- Statewide: 19,041,684 registered voters, a state record (Texas Secretary of State, October 16, 2026).
- Against the last midterm: 7.7% higher than November 2022 (Texas Tribune).
- Tarrant County: 32,503 fewer voters than four years ago, down 2.6% (Texas Tribune).
- Early voting: October 19 to October 30; election day November 3 (Secretary of State).
- Primary turnout: nearly a quarter of registered voters in March 2026 (Texas Tribune).
The questions that remain
- Why did the roll fall in the biggest swing county while the state grew by 7.7%?
- How many of the 19 million will cast a ballot, compared with the 2022 midterm?
- Which counties will report early voting totals first, and how will they be counted?
Early voting totals will be published county by county from October 19.
