In France, the woman who runs the euro's central bank may be about to leave early for Davos. Reuters reported on Thursday, October 15, 2026, that the World Economic Forum could appoint Christine Lagarde as its next chair as soon as next month, according to four people close to the organization. That would force her out of the European Central Bank a year ahead of schedule. Her term ends in October 2027.
No decision has been taken, the sources told Reuters. But read the reason for the timing, because it has nothing to do with money.
The calendar that matters is the French one
Reuters says an early exit would let EU leaders pick a new ECB president before France's presidential election this spring, which polls suggest the far right could win. A fifth person told the agency that Lagarde wanted to give Emmanuel Macron a say in choosing her successor, and that negotiations could get harder if Marine Le Pen won the presidency. Macron's term ends in May.
Put plainly: the date of a central banker's departure is being discussed around the date French voters go to the polls.
Who would be voting on her
The WEF's Board of Trustees meets on November 2. It has 27 members listed on its website, and Lagarde is one of them. Two of Reuters' sources said the board could instead set a date for a later vote, so she would arrive in Davos in January as designated chair. Reuters reports broad support on the board. It does not say whether she would step out of the room.
The board is currently co-chaired by Larry Fink, the chief executive of BlackRock, and Andre Hoffmann, vice chairman of Roche. It also includes IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva and Salesforce's Marc Benioff.
Three jobs, one package
Her exit would open a second seat on the ECB's six member Executive Board. Isabel Schnabel has resigned, with effect on January 3, 2027, and chief economist Philip Lane is due to leave in May. EU officials told Reuters the three appointments could be settled as one package deal among member states. The former Dutch and Spanish central bank governors, Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernandez de Cos, are seen as frontrunners for the presidency. France is understood to be aiming for the chief economist post.
Le Pen fears Germany will use the opening to place one of its own at the top, BFM TV reports. The names Reuters lists as frontrunners are not German.
What they won't tell you
- The source: four unnamed people close to the WEF, plus a fifth on the timing. Reuters says nothing is final and the ECB declined to comment.
- What she said two weeks ago: on October 1, Lagarde told La Croix she did not rule out leaving a few months before her term ends, adding that in 2027 she would still be here.
- The vote: the ECB president is chosen by EU leaders, not by voters in any country. Reuters describes the next pick as a package of three jobs.
- The two options: a vote on November 2, or a date set that day for a vote before Davos in January. The actual date she would leave the ECB is not reported.
- Who chairs the WEF board today: Larry Fink of BlackRock and Andre Hoffmann of Roche, after founder Klaus Schwab stepped down last year.
Verdict
I'm French. I know how a transition gets timed when the people in charge dislike the next poll. The deal itself may be perfectly legal, and Reuters reports no wrongdoing. That is not the point.
The ECB sets the price of money for the whole euro area, and no voter elects its president. Now a possible handover is being scheduled around a French election, and the destination is a Davos board that includes the candidate herself. If the successor is picked before French voters speak, they inherit a central bank they had no say in. Ask who sits on that shortlist in April, and who chose the date.
