In the United States, Elon Musk told biographer Walter Isaacson, in an interview Axios previewed on October 17, 2026, that "the only way we're going to solve the national debt is with AI and robots." The question for a reader is simple: what does the debt itself show over the last year?

What Musk said

According to Axios, Musk described his time leading DOGE as proof that there was "no way we were gonna solve the deficit from within the government." He added that "we're not gonna solve it by trying to save our way there," and that no one in authority in the government "actually wants to reduce spending," with a few rare exceptions. The interview is part of a podcast series that premieres on Tuesday.

The Axios preview gives no figure for how much growth, or how much saving, the claim would require. It is a statement of belief about the future, not a forecast with numbers.

What the Treasury shows

The Treasury's Debt to the Penny series reports total public debt outstanding of $37.94 trillion on October 15, 2025 and $40.39 trillion on October 15, 2026. That is an increase of $2.45 trillion, or 6.4%, in 365 days. Divided evenly, it is about $6.7 billion a day, or roughly $279 million an hour.

This is gross debt. It includes money the government owes to its own trust funds as well as debt held by the public, so it is not the same as the annual deficit.

What the headlines leave out

  • The claim: AI and robots are "the only way" to solve the national debt (Musk, via Axios).
  • The missing number: the preview does not say how much growth that would take or by when.
  • The pace: $2.45 trillion added in 12 months, about $6.7 billion a day (Treasury, Debt to the Penny).
  • The scope: total public debt outstanding, which includes intragovernmental holdings.

The questions that remain

How much additional growth would be needed to stabilize the debt, and by what year? Which part of that growth would come from AI and robots rather than from other sources? And if spending cuts are off the table, as Musk says, which side of the ledger is left?

Axios, "Exclusive: Musk tells Isaacson 'AI and robots' will need to fix deficit," October 17, 2026. axios.com

U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service, "Debt to the Penny," total public debt outstanding, October 15, 2025 ($37,942,635,331,189.62) and October 15, 2026 ($40,388,317,675,071.91). fiscaldata.treasury.gov

Calculation: 40.388 - 37.943 = 2.446 trillion; 2.446 / 37.943 = 6.4%; 2.446 trillion / 365 = $6.70 billion a day; / 24 = $279 million an hour.
