In the United States, early voting opens in Texas on Monday, October 19, in a state with one of the closest Senate races of the year. And this week we learned that a state agency sat on more than half a million voter registration records for about a year.

Not a rumor. The Texas Department of Public Safety itself called it an error tied to a software update on its online driver's license portal.

What the record shows

Votebeat counts more than 500,000 registration applications and updates caught in the error. The New York Times puts it at nearly 600,000. The oldest records date back to October 2025. People renewed a license or changed an address online, ticked the box to register or update their registration, and the transaction never reached their county.

The state acknowledged the problem about a month ago, shortly before the October 5 registration deadline. Counties then had to clear the pile on top of the normal late surge. Dallas, Harris and Collin counties, with outside vendors, got through it within a week. Smaller counties leaned on overtime and temporary workers.

What they won't tell you

  • Records affected: more than 500,000 (Votebeat); nearly 600,000 (New York Times).
  • Oldest records: October 2025.
  • Status: the Secretary of State's office and the county election officials' association say they know of no county still working through the backlog.
  • The safety net: a voter who registered through the DPS portal before the deadline but is missing from the roll can cast a provisional ballot.
  • The lawsuit: voting rights groups say the state broke a 2021 settlement that required a reliable online registration path through DPS.

The part nobody has explained

Everyone is focused on whether the backlog is cleared. It appears to be, thanks to county workers who put in nights and weekends. The harder question is the year. A state system quietly dropped registrations for roughly twelve months, and no alarm went off until journalists asked.

That is not a partisan problem. Whoever you want to win in Texas, the voter file is the foundation. If a vendor update can break it without anyone noticing, the next error could land closer to Election Day, or in a county with no outside vendor.

What to watch

Three things. Whether the court orders the state to explain how the error went undetected. How many provisional ballots get cast in the first week of early voting. And whether Austin pays for a real audit of the portal before November 3, not after.

Verdict

Trust in elections is not built by saying the system works. It is built by showing that the people running it would catch a failure. For twelve months, nobody did.
